EX/CURRENT BASKETBALL PLAYERS
WE WOULD LIKE YOU TO BE A REFEREE
Western Bay Basketball needs referees at all levels. There are exciting things happening to grow the sport and increase the quality of the game locally. We need officials to help with this.
If you are an ex player or player nearing retirement this is an ideal opportunity to remain in the sport and possibly contribute to your child’s enjoyment of the game.
We have training programmes in place (most of you tell us you know the rules already anyway) to ease people into the job. We promise not to throw anyone in at the deep end!
Please contact Patricia Begley or myself (details below) to help Basketball grow and to help develop a professional environment
Referee Pathway
Western Bay Basketball wishes to develop experienced and competent referees in line with Basketball New Zealand guidelines. We have introduced a 3 step pathway at the local level, which all referees will be required to follow.
1. C Grade/ Trainee
This requires attendance at a 2 hour Introduction to Refereeing session, followed by a season of refereeing at Intermediate School level or above. During the season the referee will be assessed on their practical skills twice and have to sit a one hour theory test (with an 80% pass rate required).
If a referee shows satisfactory improvement and application they will be regraded to;
2. B Grade
Once at the B Grade level the referee will referee at secondary school level or above for a full season, as well as Under 13 or Under 15 Basketball New Zealand Premierships. There will be two practical assessments and in the latter part of the season a requirement to attend an 8 hour Referee Orientation course, including a theory test (also with an 80% pass rate required).
Once this level is complete the referee is regraded to;
3. Level 1
This is the highest local level and referees will be required to referee mainly at senior club level and Under 17 and up Premiership level. Level 1 Referees will also be required to help train and assess trainees at the lower grades.
People wishing to referee solely at local level may stop here, those that wish to progress further can apply to referee at National Junior age group tournaments with a view to becoming Level 2 referees.
National Levels
Level 2 is attained by refereeing at a National Age Group tournament and being assessed practically and theoretically by the National Referee Manager. At this level referees will control games up to National Under 23 standard. From here all progression is based on ability shown.
Level 3 – CBL and WNBL
Level 4 – NBL
Level 5 – FIFA International
